Adoption Process
Considering adopting a Poodle?
About Us
We are a ‘not-for-profit’ organisation rather than a registered charity. We operate by depending entirely upon volunteers who freely give their time to our cause whilst running their own family/working lives and many have other outside commitments. Without these volunteers, we simply would not exist. The only source of funding we have is from the adoption fees when re-homing the dogs in our care or from the donations or sales on our website.
We do not have the typical ‘office’ premises which are manned 24/7. Therefore, although we will make every effort to return any calls you make within a reasonable amount of time, please accept that this is not always possible.
Also, when you do adopt a dog from us, we expect you to keep in contact, especially in the first few months to let us know how things are progressing. This is also the case if you should need our help further down the line as we will always support you and the dogs you have adopted from us.
OUR 4 STEP PROCESS TO ADOPTING A DOG (No exceptions will be made)
1. CONTACT: Call the Rescue by Telephone 01205 358673
In the first instance you need to contact Hanna direct by telephone NOT via email. She will be able to discuss with you your requirements and answer any questions you may have. If her line is busy, please leave a message with your contact landline telephone number NOT your mobile as the Rescue does try to keep costs to a minimum. Please bear in mind that Hanna is a very busy lady running the Rescue with just a handful of valuable volunteers, therefore she will return your call as soon as she is able.
2. ENQUIRY FORM: Initial Contact & Questions
You have approached us (by telephone please NOT email) offering a loving home for a rescue Poodle. This document will explain the process we will follow regardless of your experience as a dog owner. You will be asked some basic questions on the Enquiry Form which will enable us to determine the suitability and will be used to match you to the most appropriate dog.
The match criteria is generally based on: age of person vs. age of dog; if there are other animals or children in the household; exercise; requirements etc. This information is especially important should we not have a suitable dog in our care at the time of application because we will then keep your details on file to check it against every new dog that comes to us.
IF YOU ARE LOOKING FOR A FEMALE OR A POODLE WHO WILL BE SUITABLE FOR A HOME WITH RESIDENT CATS, YOU MUST BE WILLING TO WAIT A CONSIDERABLE PERIOD OF TIME AS THEY ARE IN THE MINORITY.
PLEASE,...if you find a dog before we can offer you one, DO LET US KNOW.
3. HOME CHECK
When we think there is a dog which is suitable for you and your environment and not before, you will be asked to have a 'Home Check' . This MUST be done before any dog is offered to you for adoption. This ensures you have safe entry/exit points, a fully enclosed and secure garden with a minimum of 5' fencing and generally the right environment for the dog in question.
NO DOG WILL BE OFFERED TO YOU IF YOU DO NOT HAVE
A FULLY SECURE PRIVATE GARDEN.
Home checks are normally performed by volunteers not necessarily associated with P.I.N. but generally with other rescue organisations. They will not be able to answer questions about the dogs in our care nor will they be able to say whether we find you/your home suitable for adoption.
We do not carry out home checks until a suitable dog is available for the following reason; In the past we found that some people who have had a home check by us at an early stage do not wait for a suitable Poodles in Need dog to become available and decide to get a dog from elsewhere. This has proved to be a huge drain on our resources, not to mention a waste of our valuable time.
4. VISITING/CHOOSING A DOG
Once you have passed the home check and a potentially suitable dog has been found, you will be asked to take all family household members and any other dogs you have to see the dog you are interested in its current foster home. This is to ensure a good match is made. At this stage, the foster family have the final say as to whether they feel the adoption may proceed.
Conditions of Adoption
Poodles in Need Adoption Policy strictly states that all micro-chip registration stays in the name of Poodles In Need and will not be transferred wholly to the new owner, it will be dual registration and if for any reason you are unable to keep the dog for the duration of its life, he/she must be returned to Poodles In Need.
We will never pass on information about the previous owner but will share with you any details we may have regarding the dog's history.
An adoption fee will be payable and the amount will be based upon the age and condition of the dog. Our current adoption fees are between £200 and £500. If you are concerned about the adoption fees, please discuss with Hanna at the outset.
You will need to sign an Adoption Form agreeing to these terms.
NOT ALL RESCUE DOGS HAVE ISSUES
We will never turn a dog away. All the poodles (and sometimes other dogs we take in for re-homing) cannot help what colour they are, what sex they are, what age they are or the state of their health. They all need to be looked after and deserve a loving, forever home for the rest of their days.
PLEASE NOTE: We are not affiliated with any other rescue service, kennel, breeder(s) or internet site in any way and all communication related to any of the dogs on this site or in our care must be addressed to Hanna.
